I wonder why people wonder what I look like…

It amuses me that I get quite a lot of people googling for real life pictures of me. Obviously the simple solution would be to befriend me on Facebook, as a certain someone accidentally managed to do today ;)
.
Wouldn’t recommend it though, since I’m as pasty/pudgy as dough, and I fear the sight of my ugly face would send some into shock. I need to get off my ass and get some exercise… Actually, I have a morbid fear of being photographed (is there a scientific term for it) and I think the only individual photos of me taken of me within the last 5 years are those on my identity card and driver’s license heh.

I haven’t quite grasped why some bloggers are willing to show off their names & faces on the interwebs while others have even their gender shrouded in secrecy… ego? fear? just being personable? In my case, I’m just paranoid about privacy and prefer to remain in my little closet marked ’seiyuu otaku’.

Admittedly I’m not one for networking or being involved in the so-called otakusphere, and I’m hopelessly lost in all the recent talk about RSS opti-something that’s been invading my Google Reader. Being the technotard I am, I tried fiddling around with the sharing stuff thing and ended up with a ragtag bunch of seiyuu blog entries (with notes) that may or may not be interesting to others. Oh hang on, am I not meant to be collecting posts from other bloggers… :P

On another random & completely unrelated note, I’ll theoretically be gone ’til December (8th) - away at a conference in Kuala Lumpur for a few days, then I’ve got some serious cramming for JLPT2 to do. Some people say status updates are lame, but yeah.

What were we talking about again? Oh yeah, how I look. Erm… I think my physical features are somewhat similar to those of the living being in the picture below.

Voting for Overseas Fan’s Choice Category in Third Seiyuu Awards Opens

I’m sure you’ve all read about there being a new category catering for gaijin seiyuu fans in the third Seiyuu Awards, and it’s already open right now.

As expected, details are very vague with no mention of any possible criteria to consider when nominating a seiyuu beyond who you think is the most memorable voice actor.

In that case, everyone should vote for Kaneda Tomoko cos there’s no bloody way anyone who’s ever heard KaneTomo’s voice or seen her drunk will be able to forget her anytime soon. Memorable indeed.

I was thinking of canvassing as many people as possible to vote for someone completely random like Neya Michiko or Fujiwara Keiji but nobody would listen anyway. Everyone wants to support their Kugyuu or their Noto-sama or their Aaya… anyway, I’ll just bugger the system up and vote for a really random person. Kobayashi Ai (the manageress who screams ‘Fuck’ and ‘my cunt is wet’ every other second in Detroit Metal City) was my first choice but I er… opted for the safer choice of Kaneda Tomoko in the end. Safer… I think?

Who are y’all voting for?

Minorin’s Parade Arrives…

Hahaha. You know it had to happen - as soon as I start moaning about crappy customs, they immediately deliver the goods to my doorstep \[^o^]/ So here we are, the long awaited Parade…

I got my copy of the Dream Limited Edition from CDJapan, though I didn’t actually realise they were packing in a poster until quite late on. And I immediately facepalmed, as I was sure they’d detain the package for inspection…

…since it looks about the right size to fit in a short sword or a bunch of knives and/or guns. The dreaded blue chop on the left hand side reads ‘DITAHAN Oleh Kastam’ (DETAINED By Customs).

But hey, things look in order. No bent posters or cracked CDs, packaging looks just as it usually does. Box is in very good condition too, heh.

All the stuff that’s inside, including stupid brochures that make me sad when I realise I don’t have enough cash to buy the zillion upcoming releases I’d love to own. CDJapan/Neowing are packing gods, I’ve never had anything from them that’s not in perfect condition (if there is, blame it on customs!)

The culprit that slowed the package down. It’s a Parade promo poster, the same as one of those Minorin showed off in her blog… er well, I’m not really into this kind of thing, I used to get similar freebies when I bought Jay Chou CDs and I ended up using them as mosquito swatters…

Ah, finally got my hands on Parade. The disc and the photobook are housed in a fairly sturdy box, I’m sure it won’t collapse under a mountain of CDs like some of my other albums have…

Full contents of the box - cover, poster, CD, lyric booklet and photobook. Oh, and there was an insert ad for her upcoming live tour too.

Ah yes, the photobook. Obviously I’m not going to wreck it for the sake of scans… so you’ll have to settle for poorly shot photos.

I am rather aggrieved that those ‘bromide’ photos (seen on the Lantis page) that were given away at selected stores weren’t included in the photobook T_T

But there were a bunch of similar shots, and some stupid ones of random ornaments and flowers.

Since us Minorin fans got our wish for more photos (compared to Contact) for this second album, my next request is for more photos of Minorin smiling. She seems to… frown a lot here.

LMFAO. There was a stuffed rabbit in amongst the junk you see in the photos ;) I wonder what slice of Parade’s earnings does Mr. Taxidermist get?

Mmm. Overall I’m pretty much satisfied with what I got in return for my hard-earned cash. The music, which is actually not half bad, is secondary in Minorin’s case it seems ;)

Oh, and the other CDs that came in the same box - Mizuhara Kaoru’s Yume no Ashioto ga Kikoeru and yet another Dew album (I’m obsessed with them lately).

So yeah, all you people who haven’t bought Parade should go get it pronto - if only for the photobook. I believe CDJapan has already run out of posters, but they sometimes (not often) restock without notice so who knows, you may get lucky?

Stop Raining on my Parade

I was holding this post back for a while but I think the package containing my copy of Parade is stuck in customs somewhere, which means I won’t see it for another week or two *shrug* Posters always make those guys freak out.

Brief thoughts on the album follow.

I had an inkling that Parade would be a slightly different beast compared to Contact by looking at the credits list. Elements Garden’s Kikuta Daisuke’s role has been reduced - he’s involved in just 4/14 songs on Parade compared to 7/12 on Contact, and he’s the guy largely responsible for the fast-paced tunes that gained Minorin a bunch of fans.

The first half of the album is pretty lacklustre - a good few of the songs sound like galge theme rejects (Prism in the name of hope, Lush March!!). I still don’t like Voyager Train, which is basically Shijin no Tabi’s feeble, crippled (missing a leg/arm decent verse & chorus) cousin, while Melty Tale Storage remains a largely unpleasant listening experience.

Fairy Tune and Sono Toki Boku wa Kamikazari o Kau are probably the most likeable out of the first 7 tracks - the former’s laid-back r’n'b mood is more in tune with current chart music, except it’s a bit on the bland side. The latter is actually a very nice ballad, and it sure doesn’t deserve such a hideous song title [At the time, I Bought a Hair Ornament - how insightful].

Aoi Koto kicks off the second half of the album with a bang - deceivingly slow at the start but by the half-minute mark, we’re back on familiar ‘this would make a good anime theme’ ground. At this very moment in time it’s my favourite song on Parade, the one that I’d blast at full volume when I’m driving.

Of the other four new songs, three are composed by Fujisue Miki (who also wrote Mizuki Nana’s Crystal Letter) and I like all of them. Hikari is slightly more downbeat but still very enjoyable. Second best after Aoi Kotou methinks. Hanataba & everlasting… are more typical of Fujisue’s conventional Jpop offerings and I particularly like everlasting…, an earnest ballad that tugs at the heartstrings.

And… they messed up Paradise Lost. Big time.

Graph shows that I enjoyed Parade by some 6.2143 out of 10. Very much a mixed bag - it’s as if Lantis are running around like headless chickens not knowing what direction Minorin’s music should take, throwing in a bit of this and a bit of that and ending up with a whole lot of inconsistency. I guess that’s pretty much what I expected, not having enjoyed any of the singles pre-Parade that much bar Paradise Lost.

Oh well, at least I’ve still got the photobook to look forward to ;)

Kannagi DVD 1 Specials

Up, up, down, down, right, left, right, left.

There were two short specials - a studio tour and the popular Zange-chan corner from the radio.

Tomatsu Haruka takes us on a trip around the A-1 Pictures studios, which is disappointingly, mostly empty. I was hoping to catch a glimpse of some of the staffers like Kadowaki Satoshi, Hirooka Takeshi or Kesamaru Emi but er… I guess they were all in bed, or on their lunch break.

Joined by Hanazawa Kana, Tomatsu is given a tour of the building by Kannagi animation producer Shimizu Akira (the dude with the funky hair), looking at the editing room and poking their noses into the finishing studio. And as all seiyuu tend to do, act surprised at the amount of work that goes into animating a single episode.

There weren’t too many shots of Tomatsu’s legs so you’ll have to settle for one of her back instead.

This is the second time the duo have been in A-1 Pictures, episode 4 of Kannagi radio had them touring the studio as well - that time they did talk to Kadowaki, production assistant Kegai Katsutoshi, Shimizu and Yamamoto.

This is production runner Suga Saori, who was the first participant in the Zange-chan (confession) segment. Her confession was that she used to cosplay as a maid (picture inset) in Akihabara in her school days, awww.

Shimizu Akira was up next, and he confessed that he hadn’t gotten the permission of the A-1 Pictures president to use his room (seen in the studio tour). Oh, and I’ll mention that the Zange-chan segment has them all sitting down so you can get a nice view of whoever’s legs you wish to see.

Hanazawa Kana pissed off Yamakan by saying that his story was way too long and that she’d stopped listening half way through :P Anyway, Yamakan’s confession was that he acted a bit like a stalker over some girl he liked in school over a period of 5 years.

It seems the next bunch of DVDs will also have specials of Tomatsu wandering around - maybe some of those locations that the places in Kannagi are based on? Otanoshimini~~

Epilogue: The Naba-Shizuka-Eri triangle gets resolved…?

Ito Shizuka already posted a response earlier, and I was waiting for Nabatame Hitomi’s follow-up before wrapping this one up. Read this if you haven’t a clue what I’m talking about.

Anyway, yesterday was was the day after Naba lamented about the futon thing on her blog, and she met up with Shizuka for lunch.

And during the meal, Shizuka made/received a phone call to Sendai Eri right in front of Naba (deliberately I suppose?)

Shizuka #1:
“I made a call to Eri right in front of Naba (゜▽、゜). But she forgave me… Ah, my husband of the deep bosom (*´ω`*)”

Naba:
“Yesterday I had a lunch date with Shizuka. And right before my eyes, Shizuka called Eri!!

At that time I… grabbed Shizuka’s phone!!

And I said to Eri-chan ‘THIS IS A DECLARATION OF WAR!!!”…. NOT.

Instead I just said ‘How are you? q(≧∀≦*)(*≧∀≦)p Would love to meet up and have a chat sometime’. An open invitation\(*⌒∇⌒*)/

Cos…. I want to talk with Eri too ♪

And so, my harem the scope of my affections has been widened. Isn’t it peaceful?”

Shizuka #2:
“Mmm, it was well explained (*´ω`*)♪
That’s my beloved hubby for you☆
The gist of it is,
We’re one big happy family (≧д≦)ゞ”

fin.

So yeah, to avoid someone unwittingly stealing your loved one away - why not just invite the ‘other person’ into your harem and share ‘em all around? Solves the jealousy issue, right? Sharing is caring!

You’d need a huge-ass futon to fit all of the Naba harem in though.

Note: Sendai Eri & Naba do actually know each other from their time on Gokujo Seitokai a few years back. Incidentally Eri is also very good friends with Koshimizu Ami aka Naba’s Mistress #2…one big happy family!

Radio Shows Scribblings #4

I’m something like a week behind on most shows now. What I’d give to have more than 24 hours a day…

Hyakko Toranoko Radio #2 (2009.11.19)

- guest is Neya Michiko <3
- in response to A Transfer from the previous post - no, I don’t detect any hint of animosity between Neya & Fujiwara Keiji. He even calls her Neya-chan, and she also knows that he has a white sofa in his house…
- these two go back a long way (since Crayon Shin-chan in the early 90s possibly?) & have worked together a remarkable number of times over the years - Fullmetal Alchemist, Hachikuro, Initial D, Eureka 7, Heat Guy J & Xam’d are some of the others, off the top of my head. If anything, it’s the fact that they’re so familiar with each other that allows them to let the insults & jabs fly…
- … like how Neya remarked that ‘this person (Fujiwara) is so rude’ when he asked her ‘So how is it like, voicing Tatsuki who is a high-school student’ [Neya is 43] but she was giggling the whole time anyway
…or when asked ‘dish some gossip from recording sessions’, Neya answered ‘Fujiwara always looks like he’s having a lot of fun surrounded by young female seiyuu’. Something that he didn’t deny either, lol ‘Well it certainly doesn’t make me sad!’ [cue lots of laughter from staff]
- Neya-san seems to be pretty poor, she’s in need of a new washing machine and a TV.
- Hyakko challenges again, the games are pretty similar to the ones last time around. They only cleared 6 out of 13 this time, but we did learn that Neya-san can’t whistle…

Kannagi Radio #6 (November)
- This was recorded live at the Kannagi matsuri, so it was quite hard to listen to with all the feedback & background noise
- We got the rest of the seiyuu as guests, who served as footsoldiers in the Zange 1kko 100-en desu! corner. The title is a pun btw - zange means confession so literally 100 yen for a confession, or 100 yen for each Zange-chan. Hanazawa Kana (voice of Zange) even had a cup ready to receive the 100 yen from each seiyuu.
–>Shimono Hiro was sorry for unwittingly talking about the contents of an upcoming special DVD (for his radio show with Kaji Yuki) on a different radio show
–>Lol at Sawashiro Miyuki’s self-intro ‘I came from Tokyo, my name is MS!’
–>lol Hoshino Takanori stupid high-pitched voice & breaking a noisy washing machine
–>WTF Kakky sexy low voice. Lol for bringing 200 yen cos he had two confessions to make
Confession #1: Kakihara was still sleeping in his futon when his agency called up inquiring on his whereabouts as he was supposed to be at recordings for some ‘drill’ anime (hint: Tengen something)
Confession #2: Kakky didn’t know until recently that director Yamakan’s name was read Yamamoto Yutaka & not Yamamoto Kan.
–>Hayamizu Risa ’stole’ one of the Nagi-sama fanclub cards and she seems to have ‘plans’ to sell it for loadsa yen on ’some net auction site’
–>Nakahara Mai wants to get into Tomatsu Haruka’s pants, literally. Basically Mai confessed she was peeking at Tomacchan practising her dance moves for motto Hade ni ne & she was really interested in what was hidden underneath Haruka’s skirt, hoping that she’d like, lie down on the floor so she could get a better view. Mai was also wondering if Haruka would ‘take off those short pants and show her’ what it was like under there. Tomatsu’s response: My image of Nakahara-san is changing rapidly.

GOLD RUSH - Mizuki Nana no M no Sekai #8 (2008.11.19)
- I guess it shows how busy I’ve been over the course of the last few months that I only got around to checking out Nana’s GOLD RUSH now
- It airs on Tokyo FM [Nana is the only seiyuu personality on the station at the moment] so the presentation style is more professional [lots of keigo]. Though I can’t imagine anyone else but Nana otaku listening to the show *shrug*
- Personally, I preferred Sakamoto Maaya’s shows on Tokyo FM because she has a damn sexy voice that is perfect for FM radio, while Nana sounds like… your typical high-pitched, cutesy seiyuu (animegoe).
- Every show opens with Nana answering 7 random questions sent in by a listener, this time:
1. Favourite brand: Anna Sui’s Dolly Girl
2. A moment when you feel happy (in your current line of work): when I perform at live concerts
3. If you woke up as man tomorrow, what would you do: First thing would be to wear a suit
-because Nana has a suit fetish
4. If you could choose to be reincarnated as either male or female, which would you choose: Female
-she wavered between male & female becos ‘if I choose to be a guy I can date cute girls’ lol.
5. Apart from Ehime and Tokyo, is there anywhere else you would like to live: Yokohama
6. Is there any sort of male ‘attitude’ you find sexy?: Not really attitude, but I find men’s backs sexy
7. Say something about Live Fever (with enthusiasm): とにかく、フィーバーします。
M-pod shuffle (a song chosen by Nana): Takahashi Hiro - Unbalance no Kiss o Shite
- Ooh Takahashi. This was the third ending song for Yu Yu Hakusho anime, Nana was a huge fan of the manga & anime when she was in middle school & even bought the character song CDs. She even started singing Toguro’s (voiced by Genda Tessho) Icy Blood song on air… Nana was a big Takahashi fan too, & bought all his CDs (apparently he also started out wanting to do enka stuff like Nana). So sad that Takahashi passed away so young too - he was only 41 when he died in 2005 ;(
- The main corner for this episode had Nana reading your usual listener requested lines in silly voices. They tend to make seiyuu do this a lot on mainstream radio programmes - normal talento tend to get excited at hearing odd squeaky voices coming out from a seiyuu’s mouth for some reason…it’s getting old & very annoying. This episode had a request for the ‘Don’t sit too close to the TV blabla’ line that comes before every anime episode, done in moe-Fate Testarossa style. I guess Fate fans will all go moe for it?

Ga-Rei Radio #6 (2008.11.22)

- Shiraishi promised to compose a song for Minorin like the ones in Lucky Star radio (but it’ll take time)
- eh, the anime’s music is only going to come on a bonus CD with each DVD? I was thinking of buying the soundtrack…
- on the other hand there will be a Ga-Rei image song CD (released on Christmas day) & they played two really good ones this time - Towa by Sena, which is Mei-chan’s image song & Tamakui by Yosei Teikoku, Sesshoseki’s song. Last week they played Reality Awake by yozuca* (Kagura’s image song) which was also very nice. I take it that the insert in ep 1 by Fei Lan will also be included on the disc, which I’m very likely to buy… after the crazy Xmas rush is over. Mail sent to Malaysia over Xmas period has a 95% chance of NOT arriving :3
- Mizuhara is the youngest of 3 (2 older brothers), Shiraishi is the middle of 3 brothers, Minorin is also the middle child (1 older sister & 1 younger brother) & is quite the bro-con :D She says she gets kinda depressed if her brother doesn’t reply her text messages D: Like Shiraishi says: Wait, what are you two? Lovers?
- Shiraishi on the other hand, hadn’t gone home to Ehime for 5 years & had trouble recognising his older brother… ‘who’s that familiar-looking guy’ xD
- Mizuhara keeps sending in mail for her own radio shows but they never get picked hahaha - apparently she was only ever picked once on Lucky Channel despite sending in hundreds of mail. She also sends in mail for Ga-Rei Radio heh.
- A listener question: Which is more common in anime productions - to have theme songs written specifically for the anime that have themes & lyrics that fit the show, or to have pre-existing songs chosen for the anime regardless of whether they fit the anime? Producer Ito Atsushi explained both sides of the coin - Ga-Rei being in the former, where the songwriters get a feel of the characters before producing songs specifically for the two characters in question. He also spoke about how lately many mainstream artists who you’d never expect to have been making anime songs in the last few decades have started getting involved in the industry, especially the younger singers who have more knowledge of & interest in anime than the older group of artists.
- Ito also talked about his experiences producing the Kiddy Grade anime, which somewhat unlike Ga-Rei, had no base material so they had to start everything from scratch. It was a 3-year process which involved all kinds of publicity (PVs, radio shows, Newtype features) to try to drum up interest for the anime. Apparently Ito had trouble remembering anything to do with the production (Kitty Grade? Elliare instead of Eclair?) in the first year of its making.
- another listener questioned why the staff hired such a good cast for the first episode & ended up killing them all off. And asked for an OVA. Ito Atsushi’s answer ‘There might be if we get a great reception [for the anime]! We can convince writer Takayama Katsuhiko & director Aoki Ei to come up with something centering on the cast from ep.1!’ so yeah, go buy 6000 copies of Ga-Rei DVD if you want to see Natsuki & co. return, lol.

Other stuff I listened to but was so boring I couldn’t find anything too interesting to say:
- Birdy the Mighty Decode radio with Chiba Saeko & Irino Miyu - too long, & they both sound incredibly uncomfortable in each other’s presence…
- Cri☆siS radio is a good cure for insomnia. I only checked it out because I like Shitaya Noriko…
- I didn’t find Iyasare Bar with Nana that interesting either.
- Quiz Magic Academy radio continues to be thoroughly entertaining, the last one I listened to had Hiyama Nobuyuki on but I can’t think of much to say beyond ‘Hahaha’.

…er, I can only hope the next radio coverage post will be better organised.

On your way somewhere, love?

Hands up whoever wants to be the lucky groom/bride standing next to Mamiko!
