French Guiana: The Unheard Blackout

For more than a week now, French Guiana has been in turmoil. The population is protesting against the skyrocketing price of gas by blocking roads, closing schools, and businesses. The cost of gas is currently €1,77 per liter (US$ 2,25), in contrast to the price of oil, which has been going as low as US$ 50,00 per barrel in the past weeks. The French Guianese blogosphere echoes this massive mobilization.

In a post on November 28, Le Blog Guyane [fr] explained the economic, political and social interests at stake, which justify this great popular and political rallying.

First the cost of living is expensive here, but with 1,77 euros per liter of gas, life becomes very hard for some people. So the roads, the Rochambeau airport and the discharging of the cargo ships are blocked. The problem is that some very remote places depend on gas for electricity, for water filtration which means no more drinking water at the beginning of the next week (the river water has been polluted as a consequence of gold washing with mercury) and no more electricity for the community clinic, …”

He also focuses on the fact that this great general blackout has largely not been covered by international media, although the problem has aroused a rarely-seen-before commitment from the Guyanese population and politicians to act.

Well, there are roadblocks everywhere, schools and shops are closed down, there is no more gas and only the hospital and the police station are still in function….It seems that the medias, our dear President Sarkozy and the Overseas Departments Minister Jego are not much interested in French Guiana…”

A post on the blog Dom et Steph en Guyane [fr] highlights the necessity for the population and the authorities to start a great debate on the question of greener energies.

“Let's hope that this situation will trigger a serious debate concerning the alternatives to the use of gas in French Guiana.”

Egypt: American Books

Egyptian blogger Asmaa Yasser - Dawn -  writes here about her experience at the Mubarak Public Library:

I have been used to visiting Mubarak Public Library, which is located in Mourad Street in El Guiza, since I was a child. I really like the library because of the books found there which helped in shaping my personality and way of thinking.

But in my recent visits there with some of my friends, I've noticed some new shelves in the children's hall with new and neat books on them. Also the young ones among us have noticed those new books and wanted us all to go there to see them. And there I realized that they all have the logo of the USAID on them. And I think they are part of the U.S. non-military foreign aid program, but this time in the cultural form. And I want to share with you my thoughts about those new books.
In the beginning I was sad … most of us will agree that we do not have any hard feelings towards the American people, but what we really hate is the American government's foreign policy … but what I really didn't like here was that those books were offered in the form of aids and donations and not in the form of mutual cultural exchange.

But as soon as I started to read these books, I got another impression. And impression that is common in many of the cultural activities that are imported to us from the west, and supervised by it.

The books have got many positive values and morals, but they are all separated from our Islamic values. There is not even a single hint that relates some noble value like forgiveness for example to our beliefs and our own cultural heritage. This is normal because the writers are non-Muslims but what really concerned me here - and please bear with me and my conspiracy theories :) - is that such books are intended to separate those noble values from our Islamic beliefs.
And finally we have to chose one of two options, either to consciously react with those books or keep our children away from them and limit their readings to Islamic books. And I myself prefer the first option where we can let our children read such books but exert some efforts in parallel to relate those values in their minds to our Islamic values and our Prophet's teachings in a way which is pleasant to them.

Iran: A Nation of Bloggers

The short video essay below, “Iran: a Nation of Bloggers” was created by students at Vancouver Film School (VFS). Aaron Chiesa, Toru Kageyama, Hendy Sukarya, and Lisa Temes created this video as part of their work for the VFS Digital Design program.

In the Vancouver Film School blog one of the designers, Lisa Temes, describes the team’s process in approaching this piece:

Our goal for this project as motion designers was to complement an informative and powerful script by using subtle yet engaging imagery. Although we took inspiration from sources such as the recent animated film Persepolis, we created all of our assets by photographing live subjects and tracing them in illustrator, so we were able to achieve the exact look we were aiming for.”

Comment on Pakistan: Blame Game On Mumbai Terror - The Blogosphere Speaks by Adeel Hashmi

Excuse me

BUT ARE YOU ALL STILL IN SCHOOL GUYS?
Is this a way to talk? I am sorry to say but seems like we are school kids fighting for some lunch box. My sincere request to all, if you dont have guts to forget personal difference and write something that can make things come to a cool and sorted, then dont come here and write such stuff that can create more disturbance.

This BLOG is really rubbish because of extreamist messages. I feel like i met a new gang of civilized terrorts here on this BLOG. Spreading hatred is the job of terrorists not us. And this is what everyone coming here has done so far. Trying to gain victory over one an other no matter if they are being abusive, discriminative and personal.

WE DESERVE TO BE CALLED A THIRD WORLD COUNTRY, and i dont want to answer any single person but i cant help myself from answering RAG, instead of hitting Pakistan from here and there, first come to the fact that whatever IMF got to do with us, and not got to do with you, we both stand on the same level i.e. A THIRD WORLD COUNTRY. So doesnt make any difference to the rest of the world.

And please all those with extream minds please stop writing hateful messages. Specially when you lose your girp over decency.

Comment on Pakistan: Blame Game On Mumbai Terror - The Blogosphere Speaks by Sameer Ali

Sonya,

My sincere advice to you is dont write any more messages here, as people are getting personal and discriminative to the limits now. And its better if they dont know how to talk to a girl, then you better stay out of it and let it be man to man now.

Rest i appreciate your efforts, its just that some people cant tolerate truth as its always bitter, and hard to swallow. I hope you understand what i mean.

So dont waste your time and engery here. And well said about many things in your message, you have blown minds, specially the disturbed replies have proved that.

Hi All,

I thank all indians who have come together as one and are fighting against such a big incident which has occured. I wud luv to see my people together like this not only at the time of crisis like this but always.

I think we shud have nsg operations in mumbai also and proper arms and amunitions are provided to the police we should be prepared as much as we can for such uncertain incidents which we might have to face in future also.

A special thanks to all you people who helped each other Taj staff, oberoi staff, trident staff and large no of commandos and the troop who helped save life of many people and the heroes most importantly like mr. yadav and mr. zende and many more who were there.

And I am proud to be borne in such a country were we had brave heroes like major sundeep unnikrishnan, karkare, salaskar, kamte and tukaram omble and many more.

And for the politicians its a shame on us that we chose such leaders who dont have a heart also its very sad.

I cannot forget nor the people of india should ever forget this incident ever and continue there movements accordingly.

Thanks to the media who helped us a lot but still would like and request you to show only what is required rather than showing live which might also help are enemies we cannot take a chance like this again.

Together we can make it happen.

Comment on Indonesia: Execution of Bali bombers by Prasenjit Biswas

Heru’s remarks on Allah stoops so low that it expresses a deadly cocktail of haterd for Islam and a blanket perpetration of detah and torture as a measure of justice! When the executed ones prayed in the language of their faith that redeems them from their own acts of barabarity and the later judicial murder-the sight of which merely smacked of another judicial murder. Whether Allah is Akbar and Jesus is the Redeemer is a question of bigotry.

Comment on Pakistan: Blame Game On Mumbai Terror - The Blogosphere Speaks by sumit

In Pakistan there are four waves, who are going in four direction
1)People of Pakistan - Who think about better tomorrow.
2)Politician- Which have only one goal how to rule on Pakistan, no matter HOW?
3)Islamic extremist - They don’t have any great felling towards Pakistan’s pride. They only follow few MULLA’S blindly even no has dare to ask “WHY” ?
4)Military - Who think they have own sovereignty to make decision.

Here Pakistan’s people need to think How they will make there goal
